In honor of the National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29th, we are gifting copies of Gary Sinise’s new book, Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service, to local veterans. We currently have 130 books to distribute at the Vietnam Veterans Day Ceremony at Great Lakes National Cemetery on March 27th and at the VFW Post 6756 Auxiliary Craft Show on March 31st.
Dad (Bob) was a fan of Gary’s and felt his portrayal of a disabled Vietnam combat veteran was accurate. Gary states in his book that playing Lt. Dan changed his life and it seems appropriate this inspirational and motivating memoir is given to our nation’s heroes on the upcoming commemorative holiday. I think Dad would approve.
We will begin distributing the book, along with a thank you card, after the Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony held at 10am on March 27th at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. We would like to provide this gift to all veterans in attendance, with proof of service, before we head over to Dad’s grave–anyone is welcome to join us.
We will have a table set-up to distribute the remaining books at the VFW Post 6756 Craft Show on March 31st in Centerline, Michigan. The craft show will be held from 10am until 4pm and requires a $1.00 admission donation.
If we have any books left after these events, we will post on our Facebook page additional events for book distribution. If we run out of books, we will have a sign-up list for any veterans who would like a copy of this book.
We have also set-up a sponsorship page for anyone interested in donating funds that will allow us to purchase additional books from the publisher. We will put the name of the sponsor inside of the book so the veteran will know which “grateful American” provided this gift. Click HERE for the sponsorship page (then click on the “Sponsor a Book” link in the right sidebar).
**Acceptable forms of proof of service for veterans include VA card, membership card to VFW or American Legion (not auxiliary), military ID or DD-214.
